As a professional psychologist, I still can’t believe to this day that Adam Carolla’s dad was a professional psychologist/therapist who helped clients become healthier individuals both emotionally and in their relationships… when all I’ve ever heard Adam say about his dad are about the countless situations and interactions between the two of them where his dad behaves in ever increasing mindboggling EXTREMELY unhealthy ways that defy logic and that one wouldn’t even expect from someone who had significant brain damage let alone someone who was a trained mental health professional for most of their life. And I know these accounts of past experiences are as accurate to reality as can be and without selective editing or embellishment because I know how completely open and honest Adam is about all parts of his life even when it’s unflattering to him. I also know if there was any sense to make of his dad (& mom’s) inexplicably unhealthy behavior that Adam would be the first to point it out–but often he’s at a loss for words.
I can’t imagine ever doing any of these things to any of my children especially knowing everything I’ve had to learn over the years in order to be a good psychologist. Baffling. Just baffling.
webdesignserviceParticipantIt’s truly baffling that despite being a professional psychologist, Adam Carolla’s dad displayed extremely unhealthy behavior, as recounted by Adam himself, which defies logic and contradicts his training in mental health.
Also, how did no one ever report him to the state licensing board regarding any of these crazy unhealthy behaviors especially considering the multiple decades that Adam’s been openly sharing these experiences with a massive radio & podcast audience; but I don’t have a psychologist license for California so maybe their “ethics” and standards for mental health professionals is um…shall we say lax lol.

As a psychologist, you should know that a child’s perception of his parents, especially when played up for humor on national radio, may be not wholly accurate!

Lol that’s good point. I guess it could be possible for Adam to have an altered memory and perception of his parents; however, I doubt Adam’s brain would allow him to deviate significantly from the reality of his parents. Also, Adam has had a good amount of therapy back in his 20s-30s, I believe, and based on his commitment back then to regularly attending therapy sessions despite having almost no money and no financial support from anyone else, he said he always was able to scrape together enough money to pay for each session–which is a clear indicator that he was taking therapy seriously and that he put in the time and work which would make it all but certain that he and the therapist delved into Adam’s childhood and parents and (assuming the therapist was competent) he would’ve reassessed many of these significant memories of his parents through his adult brain–which for Adam means a very talented critical thinking brain which is quite skilled in being able to identify reality/truth–and therefore, makes the probability of post-therapy Adam’s memories & descriptions of his parents and his recounting of various baffling experiences involving his parents that continued to take place up until their death (I can’t recall if both are deceased or just his mom)–it makes it substantially likely that any deviance between reality and Adam’s perception of his parents is minimal and therefore highly probable that his parents were in reality something very close to Adam’s descriptions of them & their behaviors.
Wow, sry that was long, but remember, I am a psychologist and therefore spend way too much time overanalyzing human behavior & psychology lol.
Believe me, every time I hear Adam tell or retell stories about his parents, react with disbelief & doubt bc what they did and didn’t do seems beyond the realm of possible human behavior, especially behavior by a parent towards their son. I think I’d need to have actually met and spent some time interacting and talking with his parents in order for me to confidently assess the accuracy of Adam’s perception of his mom and dad. So…anyone have John Edwards phone number? j/k
