Listen to theShow
Show Summary:
Discussion of September 11 attacks
Every once in a while, while a caller is asking a totally unrelated question, Adam and Drew hear a tiny, high-pitched beep in the background and jump all over the caller. They have been conditioned to recognize the tell-tale sound of a smoke detector chirping to remind the owner to replace the battery. This is a personal pet peeve of Adam and Drew, an example they use to show how stupid some of their callers are (first caller). They make sure to draw attention to it by making the caller be quiet until they can time the space between beeps (usually between 30-45 seconds), and then every 20 seconds of the caller's question they will interrupt him or her so they can hear the beep. Some callers will deny that something is beeping, but then later in the call, Adam and Drew will find out there is a smoke detector over the caller's bed. Adam has commented that a pet lizard in the person's room would kill itself, yet the caller is totally oblivious. He also joked about how the children of the "smoke detector people" will buy recorded sounds of a smoke detector beep to help them sleep at night.

So funny with the multiple smoke detector chirps going off in multiple rooms!
Man I remember listening to this episode live and thinking the people were SO STUPID.
I remember being 12 years old listening to this (my brother started me early on LL).
Every 15 or 20 minutes there is some kind of recorded message in Spanish that plays over whatever is going on in the show. Adam and Drew don’t seem to be able to hear it so it must be something patched in by the local station.
This is a commercial-free show, so the 2-hour running time does not mean that the ads are still in, as it normally would. The topic (duh) is 9/11.
Adam starts the show off saying it would be dedicated to thoughts and feelings of the callers on the first anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. He says that the listeners of this show are generally younger than those of other radio talk shows and so they’d be focusing more on feelings rather than politics. There are a couple calls however that delve into the political realm and touch on topics of isolationism and moral imperatives, which leads to some heated disagreement from Adam. It’s a very interesting show and brings you back to the time when 9/11 was very recent history. Definitely worth the listen.
Plus…smoke detectors, so…
The 3.2 rating must be for the sound quality or something because the content is pretty solid
First call smoke detector!
Drew sounds like he’s letting the terrorists win.
Mexican radio
Painful listening to Adam trying to debate geo-political issues. All his knowledge is from the History Channel.
Agreed!
Listened to the whole episode out of respect for the 9/11 tragedy but I’ve never wanted to skip past an episode more than this one.
I don’t think there’s a single interesting call the whole night.
It was interesting to reflect on what we know now about the iraq war and it’s relation to 9/11 (or lack there of) but what I love about classic love line (and the 90s and early 2000s) was how little politics were involved in anything.
Hearing an entire episode of Loveline be mostly political brought me back to today’s world in a bad way.
I appreciate this episode as a time capsule, but I don’t think I’ll revisit it, at least anytime soon. Emotions are definitely running high and does manifest itself in a “Love it or leave it” attitude during the discussion with Howard (1:37:07).
Very prescient comment from Steven (01:48:34) that the Afghan government is too weak to stand on its own and that the US will have to keep troops for a while to prop it up.
