Surprisingly good guests.
The guest here is really Chris Martin; the other guy speaks literally two or three times. Anyway, except for the last call (good instincts, Drew) this is a light-hearted, easy-going show. Chris sounds very sincere and has kind words to say about the callers, who are more lucid than average.
On those cold, lonely nights when I think of Gwyneth Paltrow and what we might have been, I listen to this show and think, “There is no dishonor in losing to a good man.”
Origin of Drew’s “Listen, Listen… LISTEN!” drop
“Listen…” is from 2002-02-28. Anderson just plays it really seamlessly sometimes.
A surprisingly fun episode. The best LL guests tend to be the wild and crazy ones, so with someone as calm and good natured as Martin I expected this to be a very average, uneventful show. Lots of discussion about the differences between the USA and England. Martin is very sympathetic to the callers, some of which have quite interesting stories. Adam and Martin increasingly poke fun at eachother over the course of the show.
The guy at minute 42 sounds exactly like the dude who let his dog have sex with him on another episode…
haha, mattgray is really does sound like James the Zoosexual. Maybe he’s just a really illustrious bogus caller. I like to think he’s real though. That episode was just too good.
Plus, if he was bogus about screwing the dog, he really should’ve called back the next night to bask in the acclaim the guys would’ve heaped upon him for convincing them to dedicate an entire show to his bogus call that they thought was legit.
Coldplay come off as “innocent” and almost seem a little to easily tricked into whatever Adam says as 100% true. But that’s what made them enjoyable.
Chris drops an early hint of his relations w/ Gwenyth Paltrow at ~ 0:03:05
Adam, referring to the previous night’s guests: “If you like Insane Clown Posse, you’ll *love* Coldplay.”
Expected this to suck, but Chris Martin was really engaged and thoughtful the whole time, often feeling sorry for the callers that Adam poked fun at. A great example of two different types of excellent shows on back-to-back nights (hyper-manic ICP were the guests the previous night).
I’m a huge Coldplay fan so this episode was a ton of fun to listen to. Chris Martin was exactly as genial as I expected him to be, which made for a great dynamic between him and the hosts. It’s a shame this was the band’s only appearance on the show!
