That’s a question for Adam Dristle aka UnclePenny, as of late he’s had to break our rules and pay for a few, so much for that 90s tape trading ethos. Adam is taking a break from assisting due to the lack of fan engagement, the only feedback he got for the Debbie Gibson tape was how it was “trash” due to being from the poorman era over on the LoveLineTapes Facebook page. It’s no fun to do this work only to then wipe the metaphorical spit from your face.

“the only feedback he got for the Debbie Gibson tape was how it was “trash” due to being from the poorman era”

I’m sorry to read that, and about having to pay for tapes. I hope unclepenny gets some satisfaction from making some progress on the project, even when the feedback he gets is either nonexistent or trash.

I’m happy to see any show added, even though I don’t have the time to listen to many right now.

Oh and to answer blindaudio’s question, I scour ebay. youtube, any social media at odd hours of the night when I cannot sleep for mentions of people that may have recordings. This person had the 1990 Peter Hook for sale on ebay so I bought it and asked him if he had any other LL tapes and now we have a few more. I hope he finds more.

I’ve seen a guy named Hector, who claims to be a big fan of Poorman. He says he has a ton of shows from that era, but I haven’t been able to get anything from him. I hope you didn’t pay too much for these classic shows.

I usually just type words like Loveline, KROQ. cassette, stuff like that and sort by newly listed. Rarely does anything pop up, just these annoying Eddie Rabbit 8 tracks. Is this Hector online publicly somewhere?

  2. blindaudio

His name is Hector Diaz, and I found him on YouTube. If you type in loveline 1990, a show with Poorman comes up, and he posted if you comments to that video. I’ve asked him numerous times what he has available, but he hasn’t gotten back in touch with me. It’s hard to know if you really has anything, or if he just says he does, we’ve all heard those stories before.

A dilemma I always have when rating these older shows is whether to rate them objectively by the quality of the advice, conversation, comedy, etc. or rate it more like an archaeological discovery where the rarity and historical value takes precedent. I tend to go more the former route even though the latter category is personally what I find the most fascinating. And I’ll do something similar when I’m commenting on a show sometimes, especially when I see some of my older comments from years ago, where I’m really just posting one narrow random thought or observation about the show, and not really meaning to characterize the entire show, but in hindsight it comes across as disparaging a show when really I’m thrilled that it’s here. Like I crap on the Poorman as much as anyone but the shows from his era are actually some of my favorites (heck I even named myself after him).

I haven’t seen the mean comments Gio mentioned about these shows, so I don’t know if this same context applies to those specific comments. But I hope anyone who goes to the trouble of digging up these old gems knows that public facing comments don’t represent the full story and how much their heroic efforts are appreciated.

Well said manwhoispoor, I can relate to the extent that for a number of the more recent finds, I’m the one that did all the legwork to acquire and ship the tapes over to Gio. If it’s an old show I am not going to automatically give it 5 stars. However, for me there is a bit of emotional attachment due to the story behind the tape itself if that makes any sense.

Also I think the comments Gio talked about were on the LLT facebook page. I don’t delete the comments as I believe in freedom of speech but crapping on a newly found lost show is a bit of a bummer for those involved.

All of that being said, I got in touch with the source of this tape yesterday and he thinks he found more (needs to go through and see what is what), so stay tuned. Appreciate the comment!
