Lots of updates!

While we’ve slowly been adding content to the site, it’s been a while since we’ve made any significant updates. Well Christmas came early this year!

Post-2005 shows

Happy to say that we now have the green light to display post-2005 shows. After combing through and organizing 3,328 newly acquired recordings, we’ve added 2,477 new shows from the 2006-2016 era, almost all of them with attached, full-length episodes ready for your hungry ears!

The breakdown by year:

2006: 260 shows added
2007: 260
2008: 262
2009: 247
2010: 255
2011: 244
2012: 241
2013: 247
2014: 145
2015: 249
2016: 67

I’m very excited about this. It brings us up to an impressive 5,067 shows and 7,174 recordings on the site overall! It boggles the mind. If we weren’t already the most complete, organized collection of Loveline shows on the web, we certainly are now! 🙂 I challenge anyone out there to find missing shows!

Replays

Since first building the site, I’ve never really liked how we handled replays. Two competing show pages with different recordings, often of different quality or from different sources, made things confusing. Voting and comments were split. It was messy.

Now have something better in place! You’ll notice that replay shows prominently feature a “[replay]” suffix, and on those replay show pages, recordings, ratings, show summaries, and calls are not available. Instead, users are given a link back to the original show with original recording to listen, rate the show, and add calls.

Here are some examples:

https://lovelinetapes.com/shows/2001-05-27-harland-williams/

https://lovelinetapes.com/shows/2001-12-25-jimmy-kimmel/

Comments are still available on replay show pages. Thought that was best so that users who have specific comments about the show date or the replay can leave comments in the proper place.

Note that a show is designated a replay when the EXACT RECORDING was used again. If there is original, unique content, then it’s not a replay. We’re calling that a “Best of Loveline” (which seems a bit clunky to me, but it’s good enough for now).

All shows by guest

In my mind, this was the #1 missing feature on the site. Now you can visit any show page and check the sidebar to see ALL of the shows where this guest appeared on Loveline.

Housekeeping

I caught up on a lot of the lingering issues mentioned in the Housekeeping forum on the site:

That’s all the big stuff for now. If you have any issues or want to help out, let us know!

Wow, would LOVE to automate some of that stuff! But it looks like “file uploads are presently restricted to 25 MB”. That would be limiting for us.

Also, the cost is $0.006 per minute. If we have roughly 5000 shows that are 1.5 hours each, that’s a cost of $2,700. Who’s footing the bill for this? 🙂

Nothing here is “complete” and we have thousands of files to replace, the audio is so far above what it once was and what any machine learning can attempt to emulate, even transcriptions would be a waste of money as the files are often incomplete, we just need people to help upload stuff, manual human entries like you said. I have no machine learning bias, I just already did all of the work 2-10x and it’s mostly ready to go, just finished 245 VHS tapes, 6 hrs per tape, took most of the last year of my life, now it’s edit and export time. Thanks for saying nice things about the site.
