Kid named John calls in at 34 minutes. He needs advice on how to get his friend who is a girl out of an abusive relationship. The guys quickly ferret out that John likes the girl.

John says he used to be in a relationship with her but they broke up. He wants to get back together with her because he still has feelings for her but he felt bad because he was just getting out of another relationship at the time and said it wouldn’t be fair to the girl because he also still had feelings for his ex.

Adam: “Hold on I have to talk to Drew about you behind your back. He still has feelings for his ex, still has feelings for this one. He’s got a lot of feelings, this guy. I don’t trust a man with feelings. I like a guy who can just put a cigarette out on his cheek and not even blink.”

Adam tells the famous Roberto Clemente/flying story. Adam and Drew are flying in some small 30-seater plane to get to a speaking engagement at a college. There are severe thunder storms forming and they’re delayed for an hour or so. They finally fire up the engines and smoke starts billowing out of one of them. The pilot then announces the plane is overweight and they need to discard one piece of luggage. Adam gets worried about this because if they’re 3lbs overweight, tossing one bag out will get them to about 5lbs from being overweight. They come out and kick the engine a couple times and fire it back up, the black smoke still comes out but the guy goes “well, we’re going for it.” The plane finally starts taxiing down the runway, and the lady across the aisle from them opens up a newspaper. On the cover of the paper staring Adam right in the face is a full page ad for the Roberto Clemente story. Roberto Clemente is the Hall of Fame baseball player who died in a plane crash while delivering medical supplies to Nicaragua after an earthquake. Adam starts elbowing Drew in the ribs to get him to look. He says God has just given him three or four good reasons to get off this plane and if he ends up dying he has nobody to blame but himself. It’s hilarious because nobody sees this Roberto Clemente ad, even the lady reading the paper because it’s on the opposite side from what she’s reading. So Adam is the only one seeing it. Like Final Destination.

Not sure if this is the first time he tells the story, but it’s one of his oft-repeated gems. Normally he doesn’t tell the whole story, but he does here. Good stuff.

  3. Helix

Ummm… Yeah. The lightning round is one of the unique quirky things that make this show awesome. It splits up the monotony, give Adam an excuse to really cut loose, and so many of the awesome drops like “A little yeasty on the peckeroo” came out of lightning rounds. So just sit right back, relax, and let the good times roll.

In response to rogafufuken, there is definitely a Tear-ah vs Tar-ah discussion held in the 5/30/01 episode and Adam thanks Tara don’t call me Tara at the end of the 5/31/01 episode. But this episode is the first time you can hear Adam start to get into it. I’m sure there was plenty of off-air discussion prior that caused Adam to get riled up.

Regarding the lightning round… have to agree with Helix. When I’m high the peckaroo stays dry! If you don’t like it… its always the last segment and its the FASTEST 15 MINUTES OF RADIO! so not sure how it can ruin a show… Just skip it. The early lightning rounds contain a lot of mumbling but they really round into form later on.
