Show Summary:

Poorman says he interviewed the band about 4 years ago.

He says there was a Tropicana girl and the girl from Saved by the Bell on the show last week.

Gwen's boyfriend is in the room but he doesn't identify himself. Poorman goes around introducing all the members of the band and guesses who Gwen's boyfriend is. He still doesn't fess up.

He goes to play a song but has a technical difficulty. It sounds like there was a problem with the CD so they open up a new one.

Gwen confesses to going to Poorman's house when she was in the 8th grade with her friend. He apparently tried to invite them in.

A second attempt to play the song fails so a third disc is opened. The song is edited out even though this was recorded by a fan.

An acoustic guitar driven version of the Loveline Jingle is played. Poorman then invites a bunch of fans into the studio.

The audio quality gets better now. The first caller has never heard of the band and compares their song to an RCA commercial. It is then revealed that she smokes pine needles out of a weed pipe.

Poorman made a TV appearance on Fox's Good Day L.A. and a fax comes in commenting on him. The fax calls him ugly and some other things. Poorman gets mad, crumples the paper up into the mic and it sounds like he blows his nose into it.

A girl talks about another girl grabbing her and Poorman tries to get her to go into detail but is cut off by Drew saying "Okay..." At the end of this call the girl admits to being super racist at her school. She calls Hispanic, Black, Asian, and Indian (also from Asia) people disgusting. She goes into black people being brought here to be slaves. The band seems a bit shocked. Ironically the girl's name is Liberty. Poorman has all the lines cleared and requests minorities to call in and do battle with Liberty over the air.

The Loveline Jingle is played again, but in a very angry tone of voice.

A group of callers go at it with Liberty for a few minutes. Some pretty shocking words are said. Poorman offers to have Liberty and all the callers in the studio for a show.

Finally Poorman asks Liberty if she wants to hear a song. After she says yes, he tells her it's by the "Dial Tones," and hangs up on her.

A little later on caller Joe says he's a racist too. The compare his voice to Bevis and Butthead's.

A number of faxes are read that have to do with the racism. Drew says it's a shame that people feel like that.

A caller claims he walked in on his parents having anal sex. Poorman tells a story about walking in on his parents at age 10. He wanted to show them that he got an A on a math test and walked right into their room.

After a third singing of the Loveline Jingle the band does a live, acoustic performance of the song Excuse me, Mister."

A caller is in the "gothic scene." He has to explain what it is. He also mentions drinking blood.

After some more Poorman bashing faxes, he says Fabio was recently on the show.

The vitriol once Liberty calls in is monotonous. Everyone sees an oppotunity to fight and calls in with unhelpful, abusive comments.

As for “walking in,” from what I could tell, Poorman actually said he picked the lock. Wonder where he learned to do that.

  2. Odd. My comments disappeared. Anyway, A caller has a pretty normal question about a lesbian friend hitting on her, then at the last minute says something totally bizarre which ends up taking over the rest of the show.

When asking her second question (around 23:35), a young woman named Liberty announces that she’s a racist and preaches that “white is the right colour”. Poorman decides to clear the lines and asks people of colour to call into the show. He then allows 5 different callers to confront Liberty on her views. As you can imagine, the discussions got quite heated and even violent. The members of No Doubt are clearly shocked by Liberty’s racist views. Shortly after, Poorman brings on Joe, another supposed racists. Poorman then allows Wayne, a person of colour, to speak to Joe. I’m pretty surprised that Dr. Drew allowed Poorman to continue on as, at this point in time, Dr. Drew is much more uptight when it comes to exploring the callers’ pasts and more explicit content.

It’s a strange coincidence that No Doubt keeps being involved in these controversial racial moments. First this, and then the infamous Adam Carolla 7-eleven comment on their next appearance.

Engaged and entertaining guests but Poorman kind of ruins this episode for me with his cringe-inducing comments and questions. His decision to clear the lines and confront the racist caller ground the show to a halt and made the guests and Dr. Drew very uncomfortable.

Yep, you’re right! There were no Saturday shows and the recordings are the same. Going to kill this 5/29/1993 show and move all the comments over to this one. Thanks!
